Job Shadows

Job Shadows at Seaman High School
Posted on 01/24/2020
The Seaman High School Career and Life Planning Center has expanded its student internship program, led by Student Internship Coordinator Gita Noble, by adding a job shadowing opportunity for underclassmen.

Mrs. Noble described a “job shadow” as a short-term career exploration that can help students learn about a career by following a professional and experiencing it first-hand, whereas, an internship is a more long term commitment. “Ideally, students will have completed one or two job shadows during their 9th and 11th grade years, so when they’re seniors, they can apply for the internship program with experience in a desired career path.”

The SHS Career & Life Planning Center currently partners with over 50 businesses to provide career exploration opportunities for students, and with the addition of job shadowing, even more partnerships could be needed. “These are voluntary programs and students go through an application process. Our students want to be with businesses and they want to learn about Topeka businesses and local career opportunities. It’s a very rewarding experience, not only for our students, but for our business partners as well,” Noble said. “It’s a great program for Seaman High School and Topeka and I hope it will continue to grow.”

"Career mentors play a vital role in our programs," said Noble. "They're helping prepare our kids for life after high school while providing a meaningful partnership between education and business in the Topeka area. Our career mentors are helping shape our future workforce one intern at a time."
